Comprehensive Reform  — 6 months ago

I think a mandatory National Service would be great for America. As a country the only thing that gives us a national identity is our national anthem and the fact most foreigners hate us. Beyond that there is not much that is unique to America as a whole or a common bond. Regionalism is very prevalent. I will accept the argument that nationalism is a frightening force, but pride and participation in your democracy and country should have an overall positive impact in the long-run.

The most important thing about a mandatory service was touched upon by Sam. The programs need to be expanded and awareness raised. The more important step after that would be if mandatory that an effective system would be in place to put individuals into positions that would have a positive impact on them and not create a poor experience with a backlash against the system.

I would go even further and suggest mandatory service. The idea that we can live in and enjoy the benefits of this country and never have to sacrifice a goddamn thing, whether it be the mundane sacrifice of a few hours to vote or the ultimate sacrifice of giving our lives for this country, is highly disturbing to me. A body politic and government in which the people have no share, whether because they chose to abandon this duty or because it was stolen from them, is not truly called a democracy. This duty need not be military, but should be mandatory.

National Service should not be mandatory, but the programs should be expanded and more American should volunteer to participate. Whether through the PeaceCorps, AmeriCorps, Teach for America, etc. there are so many opportunities for young Americans to give back and serve their country outside of the military.

There is also Senior Corps for people over 55! With such a large population of retiring baby boomers and so many problems to fix in this country, this group can have an incredible, positive impact on the future of America. (Think of it as a way of paying back the giant Social Security shortfall.)

These programs need to be expanded, though, and awareness must be spread!
