well, i'm going to jump ships on this (well, not complete) as a result of a very persuasive talk given at ted. http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/66

i think arts and creativity in education are really important, but i also think that refinements and improvements in the other fields need to happen too.

Stealing tax dollars? You make the arts out to be some sort of sheriff nottingham! This is what tax dollars are for!

I love and wholly support the arts, but that isn't really the governments job. This is not what tax dollars are for.

well, anyway...  — Last reply 9 months ago

the retorts here are many, but I will suffice it to say that the majority of Americans would probably not agree with the eventual destination of a lot of their hard-earned tax dollars.

find that in the constitution and get back to me.

i support the arts, but i don't endorse stealing tax dollars from hardworking Americans for it.

America is one of the richest countries in the world, but our government still spends more money on marching bands in our armies than it does on ALL subsidies for professional theater companies. In the last 10 years, National Endowment for the Arts funding has been slashed pretty substantially; basically this means that unless you're in the top 10% of American wealth, the ability to devote ones life to making art becomes drastically more difficult than it would be elsewhere. When did access to art become anything but a universal right?
