TV has potential as a unifier, but its become more of an addiction  — 9 months ago

If there were about a quarter of the number of television sets as there are now in America, TV could be the perfect thing to bring people together over a movie or a once-a-week show. but the reality is, by and large people watch in their bedrooms or stay up late watching something that they are no better off for having seen.
Plus, i know I'm one of them, but a lot of people refuse to talk through their favorite shows, making tv watching less of a community endeavor.
When it comes down to it, without tv i think we'd be better off.
And do you think TV contributes to obesity in America? or is it just a manifestation of the problem and not the source of it?

TV can be constructive!  — Last reply 9 months ago

TV watching brings people together. That's not something to regret, because the intellectual discussion of TV shows can be just as enriching as discussing literature/music/art/whatever.

Just like literature/music/art is a window into the society that produced it, TV is also! We can learn a lot about our culture by paying attention to the themes and conflicts presented in TV shows, and we can learn a lot about each other through the shared experience of watching/discussing TV!

We could be taking action on all of the issues we support instead of wasting our time watching pointless TV shows.
