Michael Pollan's book, "The Omnivore's Dilemma," looks at several different kinds of meals--fast food, commercial organic, and local--and talks at greath length about the merits of each kind of meal.
For environmental reasons, as well as to sustain the local economy by supporting small, local farmers, I try to buy fresh produce when it's in season at the farmer's market. Also, things like honey are easy to find local.
Eating local food makes me feel more connected to the place where I live.

there was this great article in Time magazine (i think) a while back about how eating local has a substantially bigger impact on the environment than even eating organic.
