Book Recommendation  — 4 months ago

"The Power of Unreasonable People: How Social Entrepreneurs Create Markets That Change the World." It is by John Elkington and Pamela Hartigan and was released early last month.

I think it really gives Social Entrepreneurs a look at how they can utilize business models to increase the effectiveness of their organizations. One thing we stress in the Skandalaris Center is the need for nonprofits to create an "earned income" stream for sustainability. Moving away from the need for grant $ allows organizations to focus on their real goal of effecting change.

Not a Problem of Taste, A Problem of Time  — 4 months ago

I don't know about everyone else, but I do enjoy an academic book that isn't just a fantasy novel. This isn't to mean a text book, but a thought provoking piece of work that broadens my horizons and (insert any other corny phrase here). My problem has always been that with all the books I have to read for school I don't have time to read these kinds of books for pleasure. In addition to that I don't even get through all the readings I'm assigned for class because of all my other obligations plus the important fact that no matter how much sleep I get I almost always fall asleep while I read. I got most of my extracurricular reading done during breaks and over the summer when I worked a 7:30-4:30 M-F. I'd get home from work and sit down with a book and read for awhile. I think this is one of those things that as much as I'd like to address the problem now, I think I'll just accept that I won't be able to make much progress until after I graduate and enter the workforce with a steady job. Sad day :(

I hate it when people condemn a book because it has complex syntax and vocabulary that has more than two syllables. A book is not badly written if it does not follow the conventional, formulaic (read: trite) story lines. Get away from the vanilla fairy tales please, open up your minds! Or...you know, just read something that doesn't have pictures...
