I don't think that a transition to a strictly democratic system would be nearly impossible logistically, but a refinement of the electoral college system could definitely be in order. Giving a better balance to the delegate/population ratio for one would be a good thing.

The only reason people want to end the electoral college is because it helped the Republicans in 2000. If we were just finishing the second term of a Gore presidency this wouldn't even be an issue.

The electoral college protects the less populous parts of the country from the more populated, and prevents voter fraud from being a widespread tactic: it stops a Republican in Texas and a Democrat in Massachusetts from stuffing the ballot box, since "one person = one vote".

Someone should also point out we're a republic, not a democracy.

"One person, one vote" is the ultimate essence of democracy. The electoral college is a step in the opposite direction. I would rather every single small state feel disenfranchised than see even one person feel that their vote doesn't matter. Putting the ability to elect the president more directly into the hands of the citizens may not always ensure the best candidate gets elected (like they ever ****ing do anyways), but will encourage more of a feeling of responsibility in each voter as to how their country is run.

Why the Electoral College is not good  — Last reply 8 months ago

I love the Constitution. I love the Founding Fathers. That being said, they lived in a different time. The Electoral College is just as out of date as state legislatures selecting Senators, the disenfranchisement of the vast majority of Americans, and powdered wigs.

The Electoral College was less about giving smaller states more of a say than it was about taking the power to select a president out of the direct control of the American people.

But the main reason I'm against the Electoral College--it's completely undemocratic. Each EC delegate from Wyoming represents 164,594 people (population divided by 3). Each EC delegate from California represents 662,864.5 people (population divided by 55).

THAT IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE. It's not just that George W. Bush won because of the Electoral College. It's because the Electoral College is undemocratic. One person, one vote. It makes a lot more sense.

Without the electoral college, small states won't get much attention. The electoral college makes sure that there is some kind of proportional attention paid to all fifty states. Also, do people dislike the system because it elected Bush or do they dislike it because they genuinely have issue with it?
