Eliminating Salesdrips — Last reply 5 months ago
First, a disclaimer. I'm a sales trainer, coach and consultant, so the subject of sales does relate to my business. While my mission to eliminate "Saledrips" from the planet is personal, rather than profit related, I didn't want to start this conversation without first mentioning the connection between the two.
Second, about a year ago, I coined the term "Salesdrip" and gave it the following definition. (I'm sharing the definition so we'll have a context within which to share ideas on this subject.)
--------------------------------------
salesdrip \'salz-drip\ n 1 : person who engages in promoting and selling goods or services by lying to, bullying, cheating or manipulating prospects; also: sales-clown, -dullard, -dummy, -dunce, -idiot
--------------------------------------
I've been involved in sales for 36 years -- since I was 12 years old and starting riding along on sales calls with Dad. He taught me how to sell by being 100 percent honest with people. And although I learned the honest method for identifying opportunities and closing deals, I must admit that a few times in my life I've told outright lies to close sales. In every case, it was when I was close to bankruptcy and the prospect's issue was, from my perspective, moot. But a lie is a lie just the same. (Note: As of the date of this posting it has been 3645 days since I lied to a prospect to close a sale.)
My point is this -- even honest people will succumb to temptation once in a while. So my intention is not to attack the honest people of the world who work hard to build relationships and occasionally slip up. In fact, I'm hoping that by helping them to understand how honesty works far better than dishonesty, they'll actually be able to never slip up again.
My mission, and the main subject of this post, is to find a way to eliminate the effectiveness of salesdrip tactics.
To accomplish that, I believe we must:
1. Expose the lifetime salesdrips to the world so they must either change their methods or leave the profession I love so much.
2. Expose the company leaders who encourage or allow this type of behavior to happen on the sales teams they control.
3. Teach every salesperson who wants to learn it, how they can be successful at sales without manipulation. (Note: I will NEVER charge for this training -- I'll give it away free any time I get the chance.)
4. Educate buyers about the manipulative tactics that salesdrips use, so the tactics no longer work.
5. Establish sound guidelines that buyers and sellers may use to easily, honestly determine whether it makes sense for both parties to do business.
It's a mammoth task. But it's one of my lifetime missions so I'm hoping this community can help.
What do you think of the mission? Do you have any suggestions for making it happen?
Thanks,
Gill
