Controlling Patent Abuse — 7 months ago
The US Patent system is a great way to spur innovation, invention, entrepreneurialism, capitalism.
It's being abused, however; and folks are filing for patents on software processes and biological components which should not be owned by anyone.
Furthermore, many patents are filed and shelved merely to stifle competition. I would be interested in exploring a patent review system which seeks to balance the owner's intent, history, and resources with the needs of the people.
I don't think it is good enough anymore to allow companies to use a patent for whatever purpose they deem fit. If their use (or misuse) isn't improving society, the patent rights should be released to the public!
