Universal Health Care sounds like a wonderful happy thing. Everyone points to Sweden and Denmark and says "Look at them! Great life expectancy, excellent health care, lots of vacation...why don't we tax as much as they do so we can have all of these great things?"

Those countries can pay for their UHC and paid vacations for everyone, but can America? America was the First World's nuclear umbrella, the older brother who stood ready to beat the crap out of anyone who would dare threaten our democratic allies. America has paid, and continues to pay, for the military that (regardless of your views on Iraq) stood and stands on watch around the world to prevent petty tyrants from ruining everyone else's day. Those countries have America to keep them safe, so they can afford to spend money on UHC.

These European states also have another trait that supporters of "cradle to grave" programs in our country often omit: ridiculous unemployment rates. America hasn't had an unemployment rate as high as Sweden's since the Great Depression. This means that you can only have two out of the three: higher minimum wage, nice social programs, and good employment rates. You can't have all three, even with throwing out our military, unless you want to drive th country as far into debt as a Third World country.

UHC would be very peachy and nice, but someone has to tell me how they're going to pay for it, WITHOUT saying they're going to "tax the rich people 'cause they don't need the money" because thinking that will increase revenue rather than reduce it is wishful thinking.
