This is a very simple issue to me, and I'm fairly surprised that there isn't more widespread agreement. We live in the wealthiest country on earth! We provide every American with access to a free education, protection from the police, protection from firemen, etc. WHY SHOULD HEALTH CARE BE ANY DIFFERENT?
Yes, providing health care to every American would be expensive, but it is affordable (it could be paid for by rolling back tax cuts from the 1% of Americans who need the money least). When someone's house is on fire, the fireman doesn't ask for insurance before they try and save your home. If you're being mugged and their is a police officer nearby, he/she doesn't ask for your insurance before they chase the bad guy.
Why is it so acceptable that those services are provided universally regardless of wealth, but health care, the most basic of human needs, is only provided to those who can afford it. I'm not a huge fan of Michael Moore, but if you don't believe that there are people dying in this country because they don't have insurance or because their insurance provider is refusing to cover them, watch "Sicko."
This isn't an issue of partisanship. It isn't an issue of big government vs. small government. THIS ISSUE IS WHY WE HAVE GOVERNMENT IN THE FIRST PLACE.
